Do protein hydrolysates improve survival and growth of newly-hatched spotted, wolffish (Anarhichas minor), a non-metamorphic aquaculture fish species? ArchiMer
Savoie, A; Le Francois, Nathalie; Cahu, Chantal; Blier, P; Andreassen, I.
Despite larval robustness characterized by the absence of metamorphosis and readiness for exogenous feeding based on commercial feed, the spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) displays highly variable survival at first-feeding. In this study, we investigated the use of three dietary concentrations of protein hydrolysates (PH, pre-digested proteins) (0, 10 and 20%) when newly hatched juvenile wolffish were held at three different rearing temperatures namely, 5, 8 and 12 degrees C to determine whether digestion of protein was a limiting factor for fish growth and survival. Final weights for fish at 5, 8,and 12 degrees C at day 60 were respectively 0.35, 1.19 and 2.02 g. Mean specific growth rates were 1.97, 4.01 and 4.88%/day and survival rates were 49.8, 53.4...

Effect of dietary phospholipid level on the development of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae fed a compound diet ArchiMer
Seiliez, I; Bruant, J; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Kaushik, Sadasivam; Bergot, Pierre.
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of dietary phospholipid (PL) levels on survival and development of first feeding gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae. Larvae were fed from day 4 to 23 posthatching with an isoproteic and isolipidic formulated diet with graded levels of PL from 90-150 g kg(-1) dry matter (DM). A dietary PL content of more than 90 g kg(-1) DM seems to be necessary for sustaining growth of first feeding sea bream larvae. The survival rates of larvae fed the formulated diets (31-40% at day 23) were similar to those generally observed in marine aquaculture hatcheries with live prey feeding sequence. However, this high survival rate was not associated with high growth and the larvae showed, at the end of the study, a high...

Morphological and behavioral development of the piracanjuba larvae R. Bras. Zootec.
Maciel,Cláudia Maria Reis Raposo; Lanna,Eduardo Arruda Teixeira; Maciel Junior,Alaor; Donzele,Juarez Lopes; Neves,Clóvis Andrade; Menin,Eliane.
The objective of this work was to study the morphologic development and the swimming and feeding behaviors of piracanjuba larvae, Brycon orbignyanus Valenciennes (1849) (Characiformes, Characidae, Bryconinae), during the period from zero to 172 hours after hatching (standard length = 3.62 - 11.94 mm). The morphological analyses were accomplished by using a trinocular stereo microscope, while the behavioral analyses were performed through periodic observations. In 28 hours after hatching, the larvae (standard length = 6.25 ± 0.13 mm) showed the following structural and behavioral characteristics that made them become active predators able to overcome a larval critical phase, the beginning of exogenous feeding: presence of pigmented eyes, terminal and wide...
